President’s Challenge & Civilian Employee Wellness

Family and MWR Civilian Employee Wellness partners with the President’s Challenge for Physical Fitness. This is a self paced program that encourages the Family and MWR Civilian Employee Community  to ‘commit to getting fit’.  As a leader in wellness, I am encouraging all employees to get onboard and take this first step towards getting their health under control.  With the holiday season right around the corner; this is a great time to begin a healthy program to help control typical weight gain over the holidays.

Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be the start of a season of calorie imbalance. Instead, I encourage you to focus on family, friends, physical activity, and good food in moderation over the winter holidays.  The President’s Challenge is a great program to start and at this great time of the year. Please join us.  It’s fun; it’s easy and it’s free!

For the most part, this is an online program. To enroll, all participants need to do is long in at http://www.presidentschallenge.net/login/register_individual.aspx

You can do this individually or you can form a group at your office location. Groups are recommended because they help build a support base for all participants. Steps to creating a group or accepting an invitation to join a group are below:

Steps to enroll as an individual:

Steps to forming your own group:

  • Sign up as an individual first at the web site listed above
  • Go to http://www.presidentschallenge.net/group_admin/login.aspx to now register yourself as a group
  • By taking this step, you would be the leader of this group
  • Pick a name for your group
  • Send a group invitation letter to possible participants that you would like in your group
  • Have a poster on display bringing awareness to your office as a supporter of the President’s Challenge and as a incentive for other offices to do the same

Steps to joining an existing group:

Once you become a part of a group, create a group or just do this for yourself; your goal is to go online and plug in your exercise efforts of the day or previous day and watch the points add up!  Seeing your efforts being tracked can be very motivating.

This program for wellness is the responsibility of the individual and/or group.  This makes it a convenient program because the individual and/or group would work together in deciding ways to exercise together as well as making the decision to do some exercise on their own.  Your efforts as a group or individually; once you plug in the activity online the points go towards your group and towards you.  If you happen to be the most active person in your group the numbers will reflect that.  This can create a healthy competition.

For employees who do not have access to computers, but still need to be involved since they are civilian employees, I suggest the creation of wellness sign up displays with interactive information that semi-mirrors that found online.  Individuals and groups can sign up manually and be plugged into the system so their numbers can count as well.

A tally would be created of how many Fort Jackson Civilian Employees are participating.  This number can be compared at other installations.

Ways to make manual groups effective:

  • Manually sign up as an individual
  • Manually sign up as a group
  • If a group; select a local leader for your group
  • Create and display a board and poster showing location that is participating

Additional development to make Family and MWR Fort Jackson successful

  • Create a resource with an online webpage focusing on health and wellness with links to nutrition, BMI, calorie counting, calorie burning, food pyramid and more.  This could play a great role in participation for our own face book complete with photos and success stories.
  • To really put Fort Jackson Family and MWR on the map, we could become a local chapter for the SC Eat Smart Move More program.
  • Our Face book could be decorated with all the fitness, nutrition, physical healthy recreation individuals and teams could take advantage of.  As well as having success stories listed

Although we are listing under IMCOM, we are still spot lighting our installation – Fort Jackson this way we compete with other installations according to Command Policy #17

If you or someone in your department is interested in getting involved I would like to come to your department and answer any questions regarding participation as a group or an individual in this wellness program.
