Under the umbrella of the Sports Office I am located in the fitness department.  My job assignment is to bring variety and spice to the fitness life. Unlike sports, fitness is described more like the daily maintenance people provide for their bodies to keep themselves healthy. The Fitness Department steps in and offers a variety of fitness classes throughout the day on land and in the water using certified fitness instructors.  We feature wellness classes as a resource for the at work exerciser because fitness knows the value of the healthy worker. Lunch time walking, yoga, RUover 2?, aerobics, water fitness programs are all offered (and more) as options to help remove the opportunity for excuses.

The Fitness Department knows how easy it is to get bored with the treadmill, so special events that require exercise as its source of training are created like indoor triathlons, or hiking trips over standard treadmill walking. The Fitness Department brings basic nutrition support as well. Teaming up and going to the local restaurant for dining while dieting or learning to be a healthy food shopper with grocery store field trips are all part of our program. In short our mission is to spread the gift of health.

2012 Dr. Martin L. King 2nd Annual Bike Ride

The 2012 Dr. Martin L. King 2nd Annual Bike Ride was a huge success.  So many people came out on this cold but beautiful day in January and biked a scenic route here on Fort Jackson.  The ride came complete with hills and loops to not only give the body a physical workout, but also the mind a chance to reflect on the beauty of the morning.  More than 30 people mounted bikes that day and showed their support for our fallen Civil Rights Leader, Dr. Martin L. King Jr.  At the end of the 10 mile ride, some participants met at the Solomon Center for a pot luck meal and a chance to discuss the events of the day.  Make sure you mark your calendars for next year’s ride!

2nd Annual Do It in Pink

On a misty Saturday, 17th of September everywhere you looked all you saw was PINK.  More than 180 people came out wearing their best pink showing their support for breast cancer by participating in a 3 hour 2nd annual Do it in Pink aerobathon at the Solomon Center.  Our theme this year was ‘Wellness with dance’ African dance, Zumba, Soul Line Dancing and more were performed this Saturday and resulted in a aerobathon that delivered not only a great workout, but a FANTASTIC time.  The entire event released a ‘feel good’ sensation for the instructors, participants, and the on lookers.  The event provided refreshments, breast cancer literature, and wellness door prizes.  This year we added a BMI clinic and offered body fat analysis and BMI reading for all who were interested.  If you have not gotten involved yet there is still time to Do it in Pink with our Do it in Pink Part II coming up on October 8, 2011.  Hope to see you there showing your support while doing it in PINK.

The 2011 Family and MWR Natural Bodybuilding & Figure Competition
was held on June 25, 2011 on Fort Jackson at the Solomon Center in the Special Events Area.  The competition was a success and the audience of more than 250 people was totally engaged in the entire show.  If you missed the show, the photos below give a small glimpse into the incredible evening that we had.  Make sure you are a part of the festivities next year!

Cooper River Bridge Run 2011

We came, we conquered, we are ready for more.  That’s what happens when Family and MWR ‘Fitness Meets Nature’ did The 2011 Cooper River Bridge Run!  More than 30 members gathered to participate in this annual event.  What a wonderful time we had again this year!  Even our bus ride is an opportunity to fellowship and get to know each other on the fitness level.  The Family and MWR ‘Fitness Meets Nature’ is just one of many areas where we offer fitness and so much more.  Please take a look at our photo slide show below and then make a point to be a part of the 2012 Cooper River Bridge Run!

Scavenger Hunt Ride 2010

The 2nd annual Scavenger Hunt Bike Ride was again, a great adventure!  Our event puts a whole new spin on a childhood outing?  That’s what we have created with our Scavenger Hunt Ride.  The FMWR Fitness Department and the Solomon Center invite people 18 years of age and older to participate in the Scavenger Hunt Bike Ride.  Our mission is to have you race around Fort Jackson collecting items that improve your physical health.

Each rider will be given a map to guide them and 3 hours to collect all items on the list.  Some items will have a higher value than others so you want to make sure you collect as many as possible.  Each of these health items that you find are yours to keep!  Once the event is over, we will do a photo finish and celebrate with a brunch in your honor. 

This year our numbers doubled and the aroma of healthy competition was in the air!  Take a look at our photo gallery of bikers and make sure next year you are a biker in our Scavenger Hunt.

Cooper River Bridge Run 2010

Family and MWR Spinning Classes...Join Us!

 

At Vanguard Gym, the MWR Fitness Department isl offering Spinning Classes!  This is just one of the many fitness programs that MWR offers to stay at the forefront in this fitness arena. As a member of the aerobics program you can take part in our Spinning and all other classes and programs we offer. Fitness Meets Nature 2008 Winter Ride

Fitness Meets Nature enjoys our 2008 Winter Ride. This 40 mile ride began at our Marion Street Station and biked its way down to Weston Lake where participants enjoyed picnic brunches. Once we returned, we headed to the Solomon Center for massages and sauna down time! Please join us for our next adventure! Contact Pam Greene for more information. This is a great time to be a member!
