The Army Family Action Plan provides a way for Soldiers and Family members to let Army leadership know what works, what doesn't - and what they think will fix it.
The Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) is a grassroots process that enables all members of the Total Army Family to raise issues of concern and make recommendations to affect quality of life improvements. Active Duty, Reserve, Guard, Retirees, DA Civilians, Family Members, and surviving spouses are all invited to participate in the AFAP Program.
The AFAP Conference is held annually. The purpose of the conference is to
draw together a representation of America's Army in an atmosphere of
education and democratic decision-making.
Even though the conference is held
once a year, you can submit your issues at any time to be addressed by AFAP.
You can submit an issue or recommendation in one of several ways:
•
Complete a form in the AFAP office located the Family Readiness Center,
Bldg. 3499 Daniel Street.
• Call the AFAP office at 751-6315 to request an electronic copy of the form be
sent to you via email.
• Register and submit a form on the Army OneSource website. Click "Family Programs and Services" tab and click on "Army Family Action Plan Issue Management System." (Issue will be forwarded to your local AFAP
Program Manager).
Frequently Asked Questions:
What kinds of issues are addressed by AFAP?
AFAP issues pertain to numerous subject areas such as medical/dental,
childcare, housing, consumer services, employment, force protection-
anything that affects military quality of life. Over 60% of the active HQDA AFAP issues impact all branches of military service.
Is AFAP really effective?
Absolutely! Since the implementation of AFAP in 1983, over 650 issues have
been addressed at the HQDA level. Some initiatives that have resulted from
AFAP include: distribution of Montgomery GI Bill benefits to dependents;
SGLI increase to $400,000; paternity leave for military fathers;
standardized ID cards for Reservists; and TSP for federal employees- just to
name a few.
What experience is required to participate in AFAP, and how can I get
involved?
Any community member can participate in the AFAP process- no prior
experience is necessary!
There are several ways you can become involved: submit an issue (online or
hard copy) for vetting at the annual conference; serve as a delegate at the
annual conference representing a specific constituent group (Soldier, Family
member, retiree, or civilian employee); or serve as a staff member
(facilitator, recorder, transcriber, issue support or room manager) to
assist the delegates. Contact your local AFAP program manager for more
information.
I submitted a proposal. How do I find out its status?
The status of all issues submitted to Fort Jackson AFAP are located in the Fort Jackson AFAP Issue Update Book (see link below). The book lists issues by the fiscal year in which they were submitted and also by subject area. If you search the issue update book and still cannot locate the issue, contact your local AFAP program manager for assistance.
